The Wall Street bombing occurred on September 16, 1920, when a horse-drawn wagon filled with dynamite exploded in front of J.P. Morgan & Co., killing 38 people and injuring hundreds. The attack was never solved, but it is believed to have been carried out by anarchists as a form of political violence against capitalism. The bombing helped launch the career of a young J. Edgar Hoover and sparked a bitter national debate about how far the government should go to protect the nation from acts of political violence.
