2:47:55The United States of Secrets chronologically accounts the Bush administration's embrace of illegal and widespread dragnet surveillance and eavesdropping programmes, along with the Obama administration's decision to not only continue them, but to dramatically expand them—despite denials and promises to the contrary. By weaving narratives by those who sought to blow the whistle on these programmes over the decades—culminating with Edward Snowden's unprecedented dump of insider documents in 2013—we see how and why those inside the NSA and other government agencies came to act; what actions were effective, and what role the mainstream media had and continues to have in keeping such secret projects alive and untouchable in the name of 'national security.'

52:50In the weeks after the September 11th attacks in the United States in 2001, envelopes carrying Anthrax were delivered to government offices, network news divisions, and a tabloid newspaper throughout the country. Five people were killed, many more infected, and the nation was fearful. Seven years later, after mistakenly pursuing one suspect, the most expensive and complex investigation ever undertaken by the FBI ended when they identified army scientist Dr. Bruce Ivins as the sole perpetrator of the attacks--after Ivins had taken his own life. Now, new questions are being raised about the FBI’s investigative methods and whether Ivins really did it.

The result highlights federal criminal charges stemming from these inquiries, and explores what unprecedented legal actions mean for the integrity of democracy in the United States.
